Writer's Resource Pages

Planning Your Book:

If you begin at page one and simply carry on writing until it’s finished – your book will look like it, and it will have little or no chance of publication.

Plan the book in meticulous detail before you start writing:

draw up a clear structure
decide what research is needed – and do it – don’t cut corners here
for non-fiction, decide what is going where – avoid repetition
for fiction, draw up detailed character sketches for all your main characters – and let them start to live
write a coherent and detailed synopsis

Then:

write your first draft
re-write and re-write and re-write … (as many times as necessary)
hone and polish the final draft before submission
